I grew up in a large, blue-collar family. We did not have much money, but we never missed meals and we had a roof over our heads. My grandparents farmed and worked in oil fields and were no strangers to hard work. My parents inherited that strong work ethic. I learned early to appreciate the value of a dollar, and to consider carefully before spending. There is a family joke about the neighborhood restaurant meal we shared the night I was graduated from high school; I looked carefully at the prices on the menu before I ordered an inexpensive open-face roast beef sandwich, which left my Dad completely nonplussed. He made a comment about it being a celebration, and all I wanted was a sandwich. I replied, "but Daddy, it's a good sandwich!" Still, I have accumulated my share of debt and material (and emotional) clutter, and I am learning to eliminate both the debt and the clutter. I am a mother of three (a daughter, a step-daughter and a son), and a grandmother of three boys who light my life. My current husband and I have both been through divorce, bankruptcy and the fallout associated with them, and we are doing well today. We are approaching our second year as homeowners. It will be fun to see what new challenges and adventures in frugality, personal finance and organizing await us.
